Here are the finished necklaces!!! They are SO SO SO CUTE! I stiffened
the hearts and attached a bail and then put them on the 16inch sterling silver heart chains! I put them in little white organza drawstring bags and gave them to the girls last night at youth group! They LOVED them! I was so thrilled at their reaction, I'm telling you it was what you hope for when you make something like this as a gift! They adored the hearts and the chain too and put them on immediately and showed everyone all night! They told me that they were looking for "best friends" necklaces but hadn't found anything yet and that these were perfect!

OOOOh!!! These are so sweet, and what great photos, too. The bail is a nice touch, and they look so classy on the chain. What kind of stiffener did you use?
ReplyDeleteI started using the Aileen's spray kind but that didn't get it hard enough and since they are teens, I figure they need to be tougher so I used white glue mixed with water. I know not the best but at least it's washable. Do you know of a better stiffener that is more archival and gets things really stiff? I didn't want to use sugar for fear that it would rot or attract bugs!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteLooks like your glue and water worked really well, the color is nice and bright. I've used clear nail polish occasionally on earrings, but it is smelly until it dries, and I wouldn't want to have to use it on larger things. Sharon B. has a post on stiffening tatting here:

One of these days I want to get around to trying the cornstarch method, it sounds like it might work for snowflakes.

Sounds like the white glue isn't too bad since it would only yellow after 50 years, most jewelery won't be around that long, BUT the corn starch method did interest me being that is the only archival method and it doesn't sound hard too do, I'll have to give it a try, I left a comment for Sharon asking what the ratio of corn starch to water is.

ReplyDeleteMelissa - these are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! They definitely look classy! I have tried the cornstarch method - and it works really well - we used it on some of Nathan's art projects in daycare.
